Mersey Ferries has long been a cultural icon and essential link between Liverpool and Birkenhead, serving both as a commuter service and a beloved leisure attraction. When plans for the first new ferry in over 60 years were announced, we were engaged to be part of this landmark project. Working alongside Mersey Ferries, Cammell Laird, and MPE Interiors, our challenge was to create a modern passenger experience that celebrates the ferry’s rich history while meeting the diverse needs of today’s travellers.
The design for the new Mersey Ferry, launching in 2026, balances timeless heritage with contemporary functionality. We collaborated closely with stakeholders to ensure every element reflects the ferry’s legacy while embracing its future potential. The interiors feature modern yet classic finishes, echoing its historical roots, with spacious, inclusive seating and open circulation areas designed for maximum comfort and accessibility. Newly designed food and beverage zones invite passengers to relax and enjoy their journey, while flexible spaces support a range of events, from corporate functions to weddings. This multi-functional design ensures the new ferry isn’t just a mode of transport but a vibrant extension of Liverpool’s cultural identity.
