A reading adventure for local Primary School
We have recently had the pleasure of working with pupils and teachers at St Brigid’s RC Primary School, to create fun new reading spaces within the school.
This primary school based in East Manchester wanted to raise the profile of reading and further promote a love of books across all ages.
We wanted the pupils to be involved in the project from the outset, explaining to us what their ideal library would look like, how it would be organised and how they imagined they would feel when they were using it. This briefing was an invaluable opportunity for us to hear their opinions, and also gave them insights into the world of design and the processes that go with it.
Collectively we dreamed up a design for a unique reading area. One that had a treehouse concept within a playground style environment to provide an element of fun as well as inspiring creativity.
During the construction process some of the pupils went to visit the local manufacturer TA Knox to watch the design come to life and give us their feedback on how things were going.
The children’s participation didn’t end at delivery, they were also involved in setting up and running the library, choosing the books to display and encouraging their classmates to get involved.
The 'treehouse' and the hideaway holes were designed to encourage the children to escape to a quiet place and become lost in a book.
