Elevating the Onboard Dining Experience: A Strategic Design Collaboration with Brittany Ferries

The recent design updates to Brittany Ferries' onboard food and drink communications, were not just about aesthetic enhancement, but a strategic design exercise to build customer engagement and increase revenue onboard. Working closely with the team at Brittany Ferries, our understanding of the hospitality sector and customer engagement, combined with their deep understanding of their brand and passenger needs helped us to deliver a stronger outcome.

Our approach began with a clear recognition of the importance of onboard facilities in enhancing customer experiences. While onboard shopping remains a vital aspect of the Brittany Ferries service, the food and beverage outlets are equally important. Our goal was to elevate the communications in these spaces to be more than just functional; they needed to be seen as destinations in their own right, encouraging passengers to enjoy a meal, a casual snack, or a relaxing drink.

In redesigning the Self-Service Restaurants and Coffee Shops menu systems, we focused on three core elements: accentuating visual appeal, enhancing accessibility, and conveying modernity. We developed a series of contemporary graphics that not only complemented the spaces, but also ensured menu understanding and selection was an intuitive and pleasant experience. The designs were tailored to complement the onboard environment of Brittany Ferries, seamlessly blending style and setting.

Brand consistency and clarity was a significant part of our design strategy. There is something unique about the dining experience onboard a Brittany Ferries ship, from the locally sourced ingredients to the carefully selected dishes which celebrate the rich French heritage of the brand. It was therefore important that customers understood the sense of care and effort involved and did not simply view it in a transactional way.

Through thoughtful design and strategic thinking, we redefined customer communications within key onboard food and beverage areas, ensuring that they resonate with the evolving needs and expectations of modern travellers.
